The Filmmaker's Way

2005

Interviews with: Aaron Williamson, Brian Catling, Katherine Araniello, Charlie Fennell, Simon Raven, Juliet Robson and Laurence Harvey.

The Filmmaker’s Way is a ‘mockumentary’ purporting to tell the story of the making of the 15mm Film The Staircase Miracles. Filmed by Simon Raven in ‘cultural TV’ interview mode, the interviewees reveal the high seriousness and depth of talent invested in their contribution to the 15mm opus.

Hear Aaron Williamson expound his theory of ‘infinite cinema’ and tell how St Homobonus of Ireland helped fund The Staircase Miracles. . . Brian Catling outlines his kind of Buddhism and describes the process he underwent to ‘find’ his character in the film. . . Charlie Fennell talks about the film’s influence on some dead people in a kerb-side graveyard. . . Katherine Araniello tells us how Robert Powell’s pitying eyes convinced her that she too could play Christ. . . Simon Raven provides the film’s all-important link to Duran Duran. . . Juliet Robson gives a rare interview from the precious anonymity of her new town, rifling through her jewellery box. . . Laurence Harvey speaks cogently about himself as a third person and about the interplay of actors on the project. . .

The Fimmaker’s Way is a comic ‘extra’ to the Staircase Miracles and was shown alongside it as a ‘making of documentary’ at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham in June 2005.
